How to Create Dark & Moody Product Photos in 6 Simple Steps
Love those beautiful, dark and moody product shots? They're actually much easier to create than you might think. And the best bit? You don't need fancy lighting equipment. Just a window, your product and a piece of black card!
First, a little tip about lighting...
Morning and late afternoon light are brilliant for creating those gorgeous, moody shots. The light is often softer and more directional, giving you beautiful natural shadows.
But what if you need to take your photos right then and there?
That's where a simple piece of black card becomes your best friend!
It works by absorbing light rather than bouncing it back onto your product, helping you create deeper shadows and that lovely, dramatic atmosphere.
Let's get started!
STEP 1 — Find your window
Set up your photography backdrop next to a window, ideally with the light coming in from the side. This creates natural highlights and shadows across your product.
STEP 2 — Position your product
Place your product on your backdrop and keep your styling relatively simple. You want the light, shadows and textures to do the talking.
STEP 3 — Grab your black card
Position a piece of black card (or the black side of a foam board) on the opposite side of your product from the window.
This absorbs some of the light that would otherwise bounce back onto your product, creating deeper, richer shadows.
STEP 4 — Play with the distance
Here's where the magic happens!
Move the card closer: Deeper shadows and a more dramatic, moody effect.
Move the card further away: Softer shadows and a more subtle effect.
Even a small adjustment can make a noticeable difference!
STEP 5 — Fine-tune your shadows
Move your black card slightly forwards, backwards or at an angle until you're happy with the shadows. You want beautiful contrast while still keeping the important details of your product visible.
STEP 6 — Take your shot!
Take a few photos, experimenting with different angles and card positions. If you're using your phone, tap on your product to focus and slightly lower the exposure if needed to enhance that moody atmosphere.
And that's it!
